Rush Hour

Havana, Cuba

Reflections

Sometimes a photograph isn't about finding the subject. It's about finding enough stillness to finally see all of them.

We were driving through Havana toward the end of the day. The city was alive in every direction. People were heading home from work. Friends lingered in doorways talking. Someone was hauling trash. Someone was grabbing a slice of pizza. My eyes didn't know where to land because there wasn't one story unfolding—there were dozens. They were living it; we were simply passing through it. The camera didn't slow the city down. It slowed me down long enough to notice it.
