Behind the Build

You are not looking at a finished website. You are watching it become one.

Crackers & Cucumbers is being built one photograph, one page, one story, and one conversation at a time.

There are easier ways to build a website.

Templates. Page builders. Drag-and-drop editors.

We tried them.

None of them ever felt like us.

We wanted something quiet, image-led, and personal. A place that felt more like entering a gallery than opening another business website.

So we started over.

Line by line. Photograph by photograph. Story by story.

Behind the Build is the record of what happened along the way—the mistakes, breakthroughs, redesigns, dead ends, discoveries, and the moments when something finally began to feel right.

If you have ever wondered what it looks like to build something from scratch, pull up a chair.

We are glad you are here.

Where We Are Today

The major structure is in place. The Gallery, Collections, Journal, Films, Projects, About, and Contact sections each have a clear purpose.

Individual photographs are becoming complete pages with names and reflections. Curated collections are growing. Mobile pages are readable. The technical work is finally beginning to get out of the way of the creative work.

The website is not finished.

That is no longer the problem.

Three Chapters

The beginning, the moment the pieces started belonging together, and the benchmark where the website finally began feeling like a gallery.

Building What We Couldn’t Find

We stopped searching through templates that never felt right and began writing the website ourselves—one line of code at a time.

There was not much of a gallery yet. Only a blank page, a growing pile of folders, and the stubborn belief that the place we wanted might be worth building.

Read Chapter One

Building Rooms, Not Pages

The site stopped feeling like disconnected files and began becoming a place where photographs, collections, journals, and unfinished ideas could belong together.

Mobile still fought us. Links broke. Images disappeared. Email marketing opened an entirely new workshop. But beneath the frustration, a system was beginning to form.

The Continually Open Gallery

The major technical battles became smaller. Mobile became readable. The Gallery found its voice. Photographs received names, reflections, and places on the wall.

For the first time, we stopped spending every minute fixing the website and began using it to tell the stories we had wanted to share for years.

The Story Continues From Here

Every new photograph, collection, journal, film, project, and hard-earned lesson becomes another part of the build.

The next chapter will appear whenever the work changes enough to give us another story worth telling.
